Welcome new friends!

Hello all,

It’s been a while since my last post. We have had a few significant changes to the program that have been keeping us busy. First off, we’d like to introduce Emily Gordon as our new Cooking Matters coordinator! Emily was the AmeriCorps member for Solid Ground for 2 years before departing last December. We’re so happy to have her back. Emily says, “I’m super excited to be back and cooking with you all!”

We also received a grant to purchase a new program vehicle. It was sad to say good bye to our loyal blue Ford escort wagon, ‘Shaggy’ who trustily served the program for almost 10 years- longer than any Cooking Matters staff member. Our new car, a snazzy grey Hyundai Tucson, is named ‘Elefante’. It’s quite an update, but we do miss Shaggy. Here’s to Elefante serving us as fabulously as Shaggy did!

We have also been busy both starting and ending a few classes. In addition, we’ve done a few cooking demonstrations at Rainier Valley Food Bank and the Columbia City Farmer’s Market. We’ve been using the ingredients that the sites have in abundance and that people might not know how to use. For example, we used canned salmon to make a salmon chili and salmon cakes. Though people had not eaten canned salmon before, they enthusiastically tried the recipes and clamored for the recipes. Success!

We are excited with all the changes and new beginnings here at Cooking Matters. We will keep you updated with the program as changes occur!

Janna
